If anyone ever questions the money I make, the time off I have or the downtime that I enjoy when things are running smooth. These are the reasons.

Hard work can cause problems with digestion including ulcers, stomach and bowel problems and a decrease in appetite.

Hard work may play a role in heart disease. Some studies have shown higher cholesterol levels and higher blood pressure among hard workers than among the other type of workers. Both studies results contribute to heart disease.

Hard work can make some health conditions worse such as diabetes, epilepsy, asthma and depression.

Hard work affects how much sleep and the kind of sleep that I get. When I don’t sleep well I may always feel tired.

Many hard workers feel sleepy during their shift, sleep loss and the body natural rhythms cause sleepiness. I may feel so sleepy that I can fall asleep behind the wheel.

Hard work causes problems with a worker’s life outside work. Participation in social activities and family life is difficult since these activities are often when I’m at work. Lack of contact with family and friends can result in feelings of loneliness and isolation. When I’m working everyone else is off when I’m off everyone else is at work and holidays are celebrated without me.

Hard workers have shorter life spans than a regular worker.

Hard workers in the oil field are 14 times more likely to die while doing their duties during start up’s and shutdown.

Now if you see me enjoying the times when things are running smooth, realize that there is a lot more than just looking busy. I get paid for what I know and how well I apply what I know when things go wrong. When you see me enjoying my down time that means that I have done everything that I’m supposed to do and the refinery is making money. Looking busy adds no value to the end product of my process; it only puts me in unnecessary danger. RESPECT IT!
